The Giro d’Italia is coming  – Get your school involved!

Northern Ireland is hosting the opening stages of the Giro d’Italia cycle race. The Giro is second only to the Tour de France in terms of prestige in the cycling world. Although the race is primarily held in Italy, this year  the race starts with a time trial around the streets of Belfast on Friday evening, the 9 May. This is followed by a trip from Belfast up around the North Coast and back and on Sunday the tour moves to start in Armagh with a final destination of Dublin. The tour will then fly off to Italy to complete the race in Trieste on the 1 June.

Celebrate with the Sustrans Giro Schools Challenge

The Giro d’Italia is coming—and to celebrate, Sustrans Giro Schools Challenge is inviting young people to show the professionals how it’s done and to cycle, scoot and walk the school run.

Sustrans Giro Schools Challenge is an inter-school cycling, walking and scooting competition that encourages young people to choose two wheels or two feet for their school journeys.

The competition will span 10 school days, from 31 March to 11 April, and the more active journeys made, the more points your school will earn. Schools right across Northern Ireland will be competing against each other, and the competition is weighted according to the size of the school, so everyone has a fair chance to win.

There are fantastic prizes up for grabs for the winning schools, and a great opportunity to show what the children of Northern Ireland can achieve before the professionals arrive in May.

For more information go to www.Girochallenge.sustrans.org.uk.

The Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council invites everyone to play a part in helping design the pin. Chair Robert McVeigh expressed the importance of the public’s involvement in the lead up to the Glasgow 2014 by stating, “We want to engage both young and old in the spirit of the Games as we get closer to July. This is a great opportunity for our creative minds in Northern Ireland to design elements of the pin that embody the spirit of the team, its history and celebrate sport.”
