NI’s best athletes compete at Sheffield School Games

school games news story webA 250-strong squad of NI’s best young athletes are competing at the Sainsbury School Games this weekend in Sheffield.

The event, which is a national multi-sport event, supports development and acts as a stepping stone to further national and international competition.

NI previously took home a medal haul of two Gold, 5 Silver and 15 Bronze from the School Games in 2012.

Funding Boost for After School Sport

activeschoolsSchool sport across the Province is set to receive a welcome boost following the launch of a £250,000 small grants programme by Sport Northern Ireland.

Aiming to increase participation in sport and help develop club links, the Active Schools programme, is open to primary and post primary schools registered with the Northern Ireland Department of Education.

Three Winning Schools

60x60resizeAs school breaks for summer, the Sport Northern Ireland Activ8 team announced the three primary schools who conquered the Activ8 60x60 Challenge.

Sport Northern Ireland’s award winning Activ8 programme teamed up with the 2013 World Police and Fire Games to roll-out an exciting on line challenge in the lead up to the Games which take place this August. Activ8 60x60, challenges schools and their communities to be active every day, for at least 60 minutes for 60 days.

Celebrating Sporting Success and Inspiring the Sports Stars of Tomorrow

rory bestSports Minister, Carál Ní Chuilín, has celebrated the remarkable sporting success of 2012 with a public event in Derry.

The Minister was joined by local sports people including Rory Best, Paul McCloskey, Alfie Wylie, Sycerika McMahon, and Sally Brown, as well as members of the public and London Olympic and Paralympic games makers and torch bearers.

Safe fun in the sun on school sports day

safe sun 2Grange Park Primary School provided a backdrop for the Public Health Agency (PHA) and Cancer Focus Northern Ireland to remind parents to ensure that their children are protected from the sun on school sports day.

Primary 5 pupils, assisted by Sport Northern Ireland’s Activ8 Wildcats Mascots ‘TWIST AND BOUNCE’ took part in a workshop on “Sun Safe” behaviour to prepare them for school sports day and other outdoor activities during the summer months.
