Sport Northern Ireland’s Activ8 programme has teamed up with the World Police and Fire Games to introduce an exciting challenge which encourages school communities to be active every day for at least 60 minutes for 60 days.

The 60x60 Challenge, which aims to change lifestyle habits for a lifetime, begins on Monday 22 April and runs until Friday 21 June. Everyone in a school community (Pupils, teachers, individuals, whole schools and even family members) can take part in the 60x60 Challenge by being active for 60 minutes each day and recording their activity on the Activ8 website.

You can take part in the full 60x60 Challenge or just take part in one or more of the Challenge Stages that begin each Monday,.

By logging every minute of their activity online, each participant will be taken on a virtual journey around Northern Ireland, learning more about the World Police and Fire Games as they go. School communities that complete the nine-week challenge will be in with the chance of winning some great prizes and will also be eligible for a visit from the Activ8 Adventure mobile ropes course.

For schools that can’t complete the full nine-week Challenge there is still an opportunity to get involved. There will be nine Challenge Stages which begin each Monday with prizes available for stage winners.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chuilín said:
“The World Police and Fire Games will be one of the biggest sporting occasions ever hosted in the North. It is important that we use the opportunity to encourage as many people as possible to get involved and get active.
“The 60x60 challenge is a key part of this. Young people can sign up for the challenge, recording their efforts and exercises over the nine weeks. In doing so they are creating a positive legacy of health and well-being for themselves and their communities.

Sport Northern Ireland’s Acting Director of Participation, John News, says the Challenge is a great way to be more active:
“It is important that we aim to increase children’s understanding of the need to be active for at least 60 minutes every day, especially at a time when obesity is one of the major health issues facing our society.
“Activ8 promotes healthy eating and physical activity for children and young people in an interesting and fun way. Sport Northern Ireland’s 60x60 Challenge is part of our Activ8 toolbox to help each of us change habits for life, it is a great way for all the family to get active together.
“All the evidence suggests that involvement in sport and physical activity has physical and mental health benefits and I hope that with the added support of an online community, all of our '60x60-ers' will be able to enjoy the benefits of healthier and hopefully happier lifestyles.”
Schools and individuals, who are not already registered on the Activ8 programme can log on to www.activ8ni.net to get involved.
