NI’s best athletes compete at Sheffield School Games

school games news story webA 250-strong squad of NI’s best young athletes are competing at the Sainsbury School Games this weekend in Sheffield.

The event, which is a national multi-sport event, supports development and acts as a stepping stone to further national and international competition.

NI previously took home a medal haul of two Gold, 5 Silver and 15 Bronze from the School Games in 2012.

Cheering on the NI squad, Sport Northern Ireland’s Chief Executive, Antoinette McKeown, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the best of NI’s young athletes. Sport Northern Ireland is delighted to be supporting this event and I wish each and every one of our athletes the best of luck at the Games!”

Two of Sport Northern Ireland’s Activ8 Young Leaders are also making the exciting trip to Sheffield to volunteer at the School Games.

After being selected as two of the Youth Sport Trusts’ Young Ambassadors, Amy Murphy (Little Flower Girls School, Belfast) and Fiontan Carson (St Patrick’s College, Bearnageeha) will be part of a large volunteer squad at the Games.

Awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark, Sport Northern Ireland’s Activ8 Young Leaders programme helps young people develop active leadership skills to motivate others within their schools to get active and stay active.

Speaking before she left for Sheffield, Amy Murphy said: “I’m really excited about volunteering at the School Games. As an Activ8 Young Leader, it will be great to be part of a big team of people at a major sporting event and it gives me another chance to put my leadership skills into practice.”

Fiontan Carson added: “Since being part of the Activ8 Young Leaders programme, our school has lots of new students taking part in sports and competitions. I’m looking forward to heading to Sheffield and hopefully I’ll be able to watch some of the action over the weekend.”

Sport Northern Ireland’s Activ8 Young Leaders have also been putting their new skills into action at a number of events at home this year, including the Celebrating Sporting Success event in Derry/Londonderry, Belfast City Marathon and the 2013 World Police Games.
