Go Wild for Wildcats!

ards news storySport Northern Ireland Activ8 Wildcats Clubs are back in action for the new school term and the young cubs in Ards have celebrated with an Activ8 Festival.

North Down and Ards Borough Council Active Communities Coaches and the Sport Northern Ireland Activ8 team created a fun festival of sport in Ards Leisure Centre with a wide variety of games and activities, and multi-skill sports as well as boccia, tug-of-war and archery.

Activ8 encourages children and young people to do 60 minutes of physical activity every day and to eat a balanced diet. Activ8 uses eight simple steps for young people of all ages, to stay active and keep healthy. It is now in its 5th phase with over 130,000 children engaged in various aspects of the programme.

Activ8 Wildcats clubs aim to increase participation in sport by offering children, aged between 3 and 11, a unique form of physical activity to help develop their ABC’s (agility, balance and co-ordination) in a club which isn’t sport specific.

John News, Participation Manager, Sport Northern Ireland says to be active in any sport you need the right building blocks to feel confident. “Agility, balance and co-ordination are the basic skills for every sport and all forms of physical activity. Wildcat clubs help to develop these skills, in a fun, safe, challenging and progressive way. Activ8 Wildcats Clubs are fully inclusive and provide opportunities for boys and girls, regardless of physical ability.”
Thanks Angharad,

There are over 50 Activ8 Wildcats Clubs held at venues throughout Northern Ireland, provided by local councils and start in September of each year. As the summer draws to a close and community groups and clubs return, Sport Northern Ireland and local councils are encouraging parents and young people to find out about a Wildcat Club in their area.

Chairman of Ards Borough Council’s Council Services Committee, Councillor Robert Adair, said: “Not only do Wildcat Clubs create a starting point and a foundation for young people in sport; they provide links to local quality sport specific clubs to ensure that children continue on their pathway to long term sports participation. Ards Borough Council provides some excellent facilities and opportunities to be active, whether in leisure centres or on pitches and play areas throughout the Borough. The Wildcats Clubs can also be delivered in church and school halls so they are a perfect stepping stone to encourage everyone to enjoy their 60 minutes of physical activity each day.”
