Lead Your Generation: An Inclusive Future

if

In line with recent rebranding and a new strategic plan entitled ‘Changing lives through sport and physical recreation’, Disability Sport NI is pleased to launch the Lead Your Generation: An Inclusive Future programme, a new leadership and volunteering initiative for young people.

The programme will be delivered by the charity in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust, and it is hoped that the outcome will be to change the lives of young people through the use of sport, specifically through leadership development and volunteer opportunities. The Inclusive Futures (IF) programme will be taking place in eight host cities across the UK, with Belfast acting as the base for opportunities across all of Northern Ireland.

The initiative will look to provide young people with opportunities to gain experience and develop key life skills through volunteering, whilst directly influencing attitudes and perceptions towards and of young disabled people. Young people aged 14-19, both with and without disabilities, will work alongside each other to help support the delivery of sport and physical activities within local schools and communities. To harness the positive and generous volunteering spirt of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Gamesmakers, young leaders involved in the project will also have the opportunity to get involved with volunteering at upcoming sporting events across Northern Ireland.

Young leaders will be provided with training and education on how to provide a range of inclusive sports and physical activities. By promoting inclusiveness the project will look to enhance the understanding of the barriers people with disabilities must overcome in society, and within sport participation, and by doing so help to remove these barriers and dispel limiting perceptions and negative attitudes.

As part of the IF programme, Disability Sport NI will be delivering a day camp for young people keen to get involved in the project. The event will look to provide training and inspiration to young people through a number of workshops and practical taster sessions, as well as an inspirational talk from a local Paralympian and volunteers. The event will be designed to provide young leaders with the tools to ensure their involvement as a volunteer is a beneficial and enjoyable experience. The most committed young people involved in the programme will be invited to attend a national camp where they will have the chance to meet top athletes, coaches and other inspirational volunteers from across the UK.
